layrs - An Enabler for the Age of Electronic Social Art
Originally released in July of 2013, layrs was recently updated to include 19 blending modes and a new interface to allow more space for editing. layrs is FREE on the App Store.
Press Release - layrs
From Artware, Inc. comes, layrs, a true multilayer photo editing application for the iPhone that allows users to edit mobile photos with the same results as if they were editing on a computer, using an advanced/professional photo editing program. In just eight months from its launch, layrs has garnered 1.4M downloads and has an active community of photographers who use layrs on a daily basis.
The ability to separate a photo into layers is made possible by layrs’ proprietary smart mask, an auto segmental detection technology, that senses the movement of the finger and spreads by itself to completely mark an object, isolate and extract it on it’s exact boundary with single pixel accuracy. With this capability to extract an unlimited number of layers from a photo, combine objects/layers from one photo into a another photo and edit each layer differently, a user is equipped with an app like they have never seen before. Further with layrs, the user can adjust the borders of the extraction by panning and zooming or by extending the mask beyond the edge of the app and swiping it back. This allows users to clean up uneven edges and allows the app to “learn,” thus improving functionality with each use.
Once a photo is separated into layrs, a user can then edit each layer differently. By using the focus blur on the background a user can simulate shooting with a narrow depth of field. Or by using the horizontal blur, shooting with a slow shutter speed can be simulated. In addition, a radial blur allows for a different kind of creatively (see below). There are over 30 filters ranging from subtle moods, vignettes, various textures to some drastic effects such as simulating shooting with a fisheye lens or dazzling part of the image (see below). Any portion of the photo can be tuned or enhanced by adjusting saturation, exposure, heightening the contrast, temperature and hue.

Further transformation of a photo can be achieved by replacing the background of an image, duplicating an object or extracting objects from one photo and placing them in another photo. With the ability to extract and insert an unlimited number of layrs into a photo, users are creating amazing works of art (see below). Now with the most recent version of layrs and the addition of 19 blending modes the community of artists are finding even more options for creative editing. These artists not only take a mobile photo, but intentionally transform it with the unlimited options available with layrs to create a unique piece of artwork. (see below) Such creative works of digital art has given rise to an artistic genre that can truly be considered the next movement of our time.
As noted by, Johan du Toit, the founder of Electronic Social Arts Forum, “From a mobile platform, whether smartphone or tablet, visual and verbal expression fueled by pictorial power is channeled through internet-and cloud-based new media tools, and experienced in the showroom of social media. Creative apps like layrs are enabling this new art movement, making art history happen before our eyes.”
Layrs has raised the bar for mobile photo editing. A growing community of artists who may have never used a “big camera” or created other kinds of artistic expression before are now creating real works of art by taking mobile photos and editing them to develop their own masterpiece. Layrs is pleased to be an integral part of this history making movement.

STUNNING 3D ENGINE
Psykopaint create a unique 3d engine from scratch especially designed for painting.
For a look never seen on any painting software on any platform at incredible performance. And it’s an iPad exclusive!
This will allow you in the future to 3d print your work with layers of acrylics using the same technology that have been used to reproduce Van Gogh paintings by Oce (Canon Group).
Might be offered as a service later on. We’re working on that.
COMPATIBLE WITH WACOM INTUOS PEN
Psykopaint partnered with Wacom to offer support for the intuos pen. Have control of brush opacity and size using the pen. It simply feels natural.

Psykopaint is really unique in its appearance. It feels like you're walking through a gallery and studio. Swipe to the left on opening to find the menu where you can select your Surface from Canvas, Wood or Paper. You can also choose your own wallpaper to customize the Attelier to your liking.
Because Psykopaint is also a community, you can create an account to share your work and follow the work of others. If you happen to have a Wacom pen, you can connect it in the settings area and configure your notifications.
It's often necessary to be a little patient while this app loads to different menus. I think it takes a lot of juice to power the 3D painting software. I particularly noticed accessing my Camera Roll and Publishing to the gallery both caused quite a lag.
The app is complete with an opening video that shows you an overview of Psykopaint. Basically after you have opened your image or canvas, select the type of tool from Spray Cans, Paint Brush, Pencils, Watercolors and Paint Guns you can then refine further by selecting one of the styles on the lower left. (Spray Cans included with Free app, others available for purchase).
The top slider below the tool style controls the size of the brush and the lower slider controls the opacity of the brush.
On the lower right you can choose between using the colors from your original photo, or one from a famous painting like the Mona Lisa or Starry Night. The top triangular slider below these selections controls the amount of saturation of the color and the lower slider controls the visibility of your original image.
Tap and hold any color on your image to initiate the ink drop tool. You can use it to mix custom colors. You will notice two rows of circles in the lower center of the painting screen. The circle on the top right that looks like a lens will allow you to go back to painting from the original photo if you happen to switch over to using the palette. At first I had trouble figuring out how to get back to painting from the image, so keep that in mind.
Overall I really like the app. As mentioned it did lag a bit, but I guess it's more like a real painting experience and shouldn't be rushed! I particularly like painting on wood as I did with the photo below. It adds a nice texture to the work.
What I'd like to see in future updates
- Ability to undo more than the last stroke
- Crop Tool
- Basic Adjustments for Contrast, Brightness, Detail
- More cool brushes!
Note: Both of the images were painted in Psykopaint, but I used Snapseed for adjusting contrast and detail and tones.
What are your first impressions???

Steller is a Stellar Storytelling App!
I recently created a profile using the Steller app and published my first story. The Steller format allows for combining your story to include text, imagery and videos using various layouts and fonts. Once you create your first story you can curate it to a Collection. Collections can include your own work or you can republish other works on Steller into a Collection (kind of like you do with a Pinterest Board). I've started one called Healthy Eats because I love the recipes I"m finding on Steller.
For my first story I decided to introduce myself and my love of creating painterly mobile art. Click on the image below to read the story on the web version of Steller.
Once you sign-up for Steller through the app (free on The App Store) you can start creating your own stories and collections. Be sure to look for me (just search Geri Centonze) and follow and I will be happy to follow back to see your stories!
Continuing on with my theme of The Painterly Way, I published a full tutorial for creating "California Dreaming". Click on it to view the tutorial in Steller. You'll see how I turned a very ordinal image into this painterly one.
Steller is about to release the latest version next week. Stay tuned because I'll be back with a press release on that soon! Are you using Steller? If so, please let me know how you're liking it so far in the comments below.

Painted Camera App Competition Winners Announced
The developers of the Painted Camera app (soon to be released) held a competition recently. Here are the results of the contest, reposted from Mobitog with permission from the developer of Painted Camera. (I'm over the moon that Gilles chose one of my images!)
After a long delay and many life events (all of them good mind you, but some of them rather big, more of that later), here are finally the winners of the painted camera screenshot contest.
First some numbers: I gave away 28 promo codes total for this contest to mobitog and Geri Centonze blog, Art of Mob. I got over 220 submissions from 24 people!!! Wow!!! Much more than expected!
The quality of the submissions were remarkable, and after my first pass picking anything I loved and deemed worthy of representing my app I was down to... 77 images!!! Now you are starting to understand why it was so hard, I had to pick three!!! Three!!!
After much agony, soul searching, reversals and re-reversals, here are the three winners, in no specific order:
Sandy MacGowan sent a wonderful set of pictures taken on a snowy sunrise, to beautiful and rich results. She made singular yet stunning uses of the app, some of them I love even more than the one I picked for the app store as almost abstract and ethereal, but I pick this image for the contest as it is both simple and strong, and show you what you can get straight out of the app when you see something in the wild that you know will look very special with a glazed treatment.
Andrea Bigiarini sent me a series of slightly post processed, intimate and warm renders. His eyes for contrast, color and composition is just exquisite. There were all taken in the streets of Florence, inside what I believe is his apartment or from his balcony, and I just adore them. I grew up in southern France and always had a huge soft spot for anything Italian, but even if I had not, I know I would still fall for this:
Geri Centonze sent me an amazing set of portraits. For the large number of submission I got, I actually didn't get as many portraits as I was hoping for, which is actually not taking anything away from Geri's submissions, which were stellar. Beautiful composition, lighting, perfect use of the app, beautiful texture choice looking great in large or small size, expressive, interesting, original subjects. It was actually hard to pick one from the many she sent me, but this one is just perfect.
I picked these image not only for their qualities but also because I felt they meshed very well as a set to represent what the app can do. The three winners will get explicit mention on the App Store
and I will sent the nicest giclée print money can buy in Northern California.
I will also mention though, that until the very end I wanted to have in that list at least one entry from a fantastic mobile artist who sent me a barrage of submissions that just blew my mind: Alain Vincent. I have no idea how he does this. I know he is using the app, I have no idea how. I love his stuff so much, I think I watch it about every day on my iPad, but in the end I felt it was a bit too radical for the App Store page.
Here are two of the many entries Alain sent me:

Brushstroke - A New Painterly App and a Giveaway!
Just when I thought I had all the best painterly apps in The App Store, a new one has arrived and it's definitely a keeper and one you'll want to add to your painterly toolbox. The new kid on the block is Brushstroke, developed by Code Organa who is the mastermind behind another favorite of mine, ToonCamera. Code Organa was kind enough to send me a promo code to try it out. I did a bit of experimentation and was really pleased with the results. I was also given TEN promo codes for a giveaway. Keep reading to find out how to enter.
Brushstroke has a straightforward and beautiful interface. After uploading an image first you select the painting style (choose from 38!). Next you can change the tone of your painting (36 choices). You can even alter the canvas style and tint of the canvas (choose from 15). Brushstroke also allows you to adjust Brightness, Contrast, Saturation, Density, Exposure, Shadows, Highlights and Temperature.
A fabulous feature that I haven't seen on any other painterly app is the ability to sign your creation right in the app. Normally I have to go to another app to accomplish this. The app is even smart enough to choose colors from the image palette for your signature! On my wishlist for a future update would be the ability to move the signature to an exact spot on the canvas. UPDATE: Resizing and relocating the signature is a feature that is currently available and can be accessed on the primary view that renders the signature.
Brushstroke has also partnered with CanvasPop so you can order a quality print of your artwork right from the app.
Here are a few of my creations using the app:
