I noticed you are a member of several groups on Instagram - rsa_preciousjunk, rsa_doorsandwindows. Do you ever meet up with any other group members for photo shoots?
Actually, I have never met up with anyone. I have people with whom I regularly exchange comments and likes, and I think it would be really fun to actually meet up with some of them. For now, my hobby is really a personal thing. I know that it can be quite irritating, for friends or family who are not so into it, to constantly have to wait for me to take a shot or ten. I actually prefer taking time to wander on my own and shoot whatever catches my eye.

Quite a few weeks later I was reading about two different water effect apps. I already had one (ColorLake Free) but the advice on The App Whisperer blog was that the other one (Flood) was better. So I bought it and was just playing with it on this particularly photo, with absolutely no intention of using it in an edit. However, I did have a bit of fun and I liked the way the stone wall had disappeared! At some point I converted it to black and white.

| After the Flood |
I then decided (for some odd reason) to put it through another recently acquired app called Trimaginator, which I had not yet used either. (I must have been feeling a bit uninhibited that night, because this was all right out of my usual comfort zone!)

| Here is what evolved in Trimaginator |
Suddenly the man looked like he was walking forward and it started to grow on me. He seemed to have his hands in his pockets as he moved away. At this point, I decided that it was time to add some texture and colour. I can’t say exactly what apps I used to add the texture, but possibly DistressedFX plus some ScratchCam; perhaps some Mextures and another saved texture. I always like to overlay multiple textures so their source is not so obvious. I am not that good at keeping track of what I do. I know that I also did some layering with the original photo (probably in Superimpose), because I can see some extra detail from the original in the finished shot. I think the yellow hue came from a filter in Superimpose.

If you could share one secret you've learned for taking a good photo, what would it be?
I think the main thing is to take a genuine interest in the world around you and enjoy the process. I have learned to see so much more, that I find so many possibilities everywhere. I try to keep the frame clear of things which do not really add to the image, by moving around the scene until the elements I want all come together. Often this will happen after many shots have been taken.

Is there anything else you'd like to add?
I would really like to thank you Geri, for taking an interest in my images and for giving me a chance to share them here. I think your blog is such an inspiration to many and I am so glad that I found it.

Make Your Own Textures With Effexy App
Today is Mob Paint Monday and I'm about 30,000 feet in the air flying back from a visit to St. Louis. I didn't want to totally abandon everyone so I am reposting part of an article I did about the Effexy app a while ago. Effexy was recently free for a limited time but is currently priced at $0.99 on the App Store.

About Effexy:
Effexy makes photo editing fun by adding interactive filter effects that you can modify on screen with your fingers. Dramatic effects such as melt, hand shake, and liquify alter your image into a work of art with the swipe of the finger or shake of the device.
Effexy has a wide range of photo manipulation tools that give you complete freedom when editing your favorite photos. Whether you just want to touch up an image before sharing it on Facebook/Twitter, or if you’re looking to create more advanced motion blur effects, Effexy has it covered!
Add multiple layers of effects to your photos before sharing them on your favorite social networks.
Features:
★ 10 interactive "Effex" for dramatically altering your image: liquify, melt, hand shake, motion blur, spin blur, zoom blur, tilt-shift, motion lite, spin lite, zoom lite.
★ Adjust the brightness, exposure, contrast, gamma, shadows and highlights!
★ Play with the color in your images, including the saturation, hue, white balance and Sepia!
★ Add beautiful textures to your photos, including emboss, erosion, dilation, polka dot, halftone and kuwahara.
★ Add edges using toon, sharpen, unsharpen masks, sobel edges and vignette effects.
★ Blur your images using gaussian, fast and bilateral blur effects.
★ Choose the size of the output image after editing, up to full resolution.
★ Full Twitter, Tumblr and Facebook sharing support. Share with #effexy.
Many of the effects can be adjusted to any level of intensity by using simple sliders, giving you great flexibility when it comes to manipulating your images.
We’re always happy to hear your feedback on our app, and are actively working on new features! Feel free to get in touch with us via our support page!

Here’s an image I created using Effexy. I blended it with the original image in Image Blender and tweaked it a bit in Snapseed.

One of my favorite features and one I haven’t seen in any other app is the Hand Shake effect. By setting the sliders and shaking your device you can get a cool effect either subtle or dramatic.

I’m not always conventional when I use apps and I ended up creating a photo texture using the Hand Shake effect. I started with a photo of a painter’s drop cloth.

I applied the Hand Shake Effect in Effexy.

and then from the Texture folder, I applied Effexy’s Emboss Effect to create this cool texture below. I know this will look great layered over one of my images!

It’s all about experimenting! Have fun!

Looking for Free Textures? Try Shadowhouse Creations
Back in the days when I did digital scrapbooking working in Photoshop, I discovered a site, Shadowhouse Creations created by Jerry Jones. Jerry generously creates these textures and offers them for FREE to anyone who would like to download them.
His Terms of Use are simple and straightforward and his textures can be used for personal or commercial projects. Use any blending app to layer textures over your images. Apply different blending modes for various results. I use Sketch Club because it allows me to transform the layered texture to fit the aspect ratio of the photo I'm working on. You can add the textures above or below your image. Experiment and see what you like best. Or, try the Diana Photo app ($0.99) and let the presets in the app do the magic for you.
Below are some samples using various Shadowhouse Creations textures and the Diana Photo app.
Here's the most recent set featured on his site - clicking on the image will take you to Shadowhouse Creations so you can download the zip file. Most of the files in this set are 3600 x 2800 pixels.
Below is an image I made using one of the textures from this set and the Union App ($1.99) to do the layering and masking.
Happy Layering!

Textures - Make Your Own
There are some excellent apps for those of us who like to texturize our images. In no particular order some of my favorites are Stackables, Mextures, Distressed FX, Pic Grunger and ScratchCam FX. With these apps you upload your image and use one of the many presets or create your own using the various elements within the app.
However, if you have a blending app, such as Image Blender which allows you to layer images and change the blending mode, you can add your own textures to an image.
How to Create Your Own Texture
Take a photo of any surface that has a texture. For this example I chose a cardboard box in our garage. Other great surfaces are cloth, paper, stone, wood. Be on the lookout for textured surfaces wherever you go.
The above image could be used as a stand alone texture, but I decided to enhance it a bit using a few apps. I opened the image in Snapseed and made the following adjustments in the Tune Image module:
Brightness -50
Ambiance +50
Contrast -100
Saturation -100
Warmth +25
Apply changes and Save to Camera Roll
For the final step I loaded the above image into Effexy. Select the + sign at the top of the screen and then select Texture. From the Texture folder select Emboss to add a slight embossed effect to your image. Next, while still in Effexy, click the Texture Folder again to get back to the previous menu. Click the + button again and choose the Effex folder this time. From the Effex folder select Motion Lite and swipe your finger up to add a slight motion blur to the image. Save the image to your Camera Roll for use as your own texture.
Here is the texture applied to an image using several blending modes. I used Sketch Club to layer and blend the texture with one of my photos but you could use any app you have that allows you to add layers and adjust bending modes.
Method 2 - Hipstamatic and Brushstroke.
Shoot any flat surface with a random lens and film combination using Hipstamatic. The image below is a close-up of the palm of my hand using Hipstamatic Wonder Lens and C-Type Plate.
Open the image in Brushstroke and add one of the painterly filters. I selected Abstract A2. Save to Camera Roll to use as your Texture.
Apply the texture to your photographs using a blending app - experiment with blending modes. You can add the texture on more than one layer. In the image on the bottom right I first loaded my photograph, then added the texture layer set on Overlay blending mode at 100%. On top of that I added the texture again, this time using Normal blending mode at 60%. There is no right or wrong way - experiment and see what you like!
