Mob Street Featured Photographer - Richard Pilon

“I fell in love with taking pictures, with wandering around finding things. To me it feels like a kind of performance. The picture is a document of that performance.” Alec Soth

I am pleased to feature Richard Pilon in this ongoing series of mobile street photographers selected from the Mob Street Flickr Group

I live in Eastern Ontario, Canada and work as a professional engineer in the field of water resources. Most of my time is spent at work and with my family. In my spare time I have two main passions: running and photography.

My interest in photography began at age 17 during a school trip to New York City in 1978. Although I've always enjoyed taking photos, photography became a real passion for me in 2009 when I acquired my first DSLR camera. I initially experimented with various styles, but after giving street photography a try in July 2011, I was hooked.

The next turning point in my photography was discovering what the iPhone could do for me. It's unobtrusive and compact, providing a world of opportunities for the street photographer. With the iPhone I can be unnoticeable and because it's with me all the time, I have a lot more success getting candid shots.

Richard's Commentary

This photograph was taken during a recent trip to Chicago. I was walking the Magnificent Mile on North Michigan Avenue and spotted a good background for a passerby shot. I knew the shot I wanted but there were too many people walking by. With a little patience I was finally able to capture the shot I had imagined.

Although most of my candid shots are taken "spur of the moment" when I see something that catches my eye, I sometimes like to wait for a particular scene to unfold.

As with this image my normal process is to shoot with Hipstamtic's Jane lens and Blanko Freedom13 film. Minor editing is done on the iPad with Snapseed and Retouch.
