The Rate Friday Initiative - Help Indie Developers!
Apparently this initiative was started early this year, but I just found out about it and wanted to spread the word.
This week I was showing my daughter-in-law how I edit photos - she was amazed at what I was able to do with apps that cost only a dollar or two. When you think about it, most of us started with traditional photography and editing with expensive software programs on our computers. Now we can do almost anything on a mobile device thanks to the incredible work of independent app developers.

The Rate Friday Initiative was started by Luc Vandal of Edovia as a New Year's Resolution. Luc is a developer himself (I have his Screens VNC app which allows me to access my Mac from my iPad!) Each Friday, find an app you enjoy on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac and go to The App Store and rate it. Then tweet the app with the hashtag #RateFriday. It's that simple.
How does this help?Well, this helps in two ways - it is a way of supporting the apps you like - with more than a million apps on The App Store, it's hard to get noticed in the crowd. Ratings help!
Secondly, by sharing on Twitter, you let people know about some really great apps.
To kick it off, I rated Tangled FX - I thought I already did that! (Just a note if you receive a promo code for an app, you will be unable to rate as The App Store allows only users who purchased the app to rate).
What if I don't like an app?
You would think leaving a negative review would be the way to show your displeasure for an app, but I've found the best way to rectify a problem is to contact the developer. Most developers provide a way to contact them for support, suggestions or bug reports. When I have made contact, they have been more than happy to help and even thanked me because sometimes they are unaware of issues with their app.
Leaving a 1-star rating doesn't allow the developer to contact you or solve your issue. Of course if there's no way to reach a developer, he or she probably isn't too serious about pleasing their customers, so in that case you may have no alternative but to leave a poor rating to warn potential buyers.
