The Whole Story - Unknown Horizons by Halil Yalçin
Once again, I bring you an image submitted for this series. Although a picture is worth a 1000 words, there are times when I want to know what is really going on in the photo and what captured the photographer's attention to want to freeze a particular moment in time. Today's submission is by Halil Yalçin - please read on to learn The Whole Story. Do you know? Each migration has its own history. How could you leave all of them behind you? How could you take the road to go for unknown horizons? Is it easy to leave your home, your land, your sky and stars? Being witness to the migration of a family is a real sadness.
I took a ferry during my last trip with my family. Gulls, fall, used ropes and a cup of tea under the autumn sun; They were all very pleasant. I said, what a nice trip! I wanted to have a short walk to relax my legs. Suddenly, I saw her. A silhouette...Black...She was sitting on the front side of the ferry near the ropes. She looked to the horizon. She hid her face, constantly praying. Three young men were standing near her. The one that appeared the oldest called to her, “Don't worry mum, everything will be great. We had lost our hopes. A new life, chance will be with us and we will begin again. Don’t worry." She did not hear or did not care what he said. Her heart was dark, She was like a black shadow in the colorful world. Seagulls gave up following the ship. She returned to her prayer.
I had already prepared my iPhone and I wanted to try a Hipstamatic combination that I had never used. I kept my camera on my chest. I took 5 or 6 photos. I tried to follow them as much as possible. I was sorry, but my curiosity took control. Far away from a big city. Screams of seagulls confused the sounds of the city. She felt herself as the smallest one, she felt loneliness in her heart. When the sounds rose, she felt the ship's whistle in her heart and understood that it was the end of the trip. She wanted to hold the ropes. She turned her head to the pier with worry on her face and saw the crowd. The end of the story...I can only guess and leave it to your own feelings.

After discovering the amazing works of the iPhone, my approach to the mobile artistry was totally changed. I have started to use Instagram for sharing my photos. It is my greatest passion now.

The Whole Story | Maiden's Tower by Halil Yalçin
This is the third Whole Story feature for Halil Yalçin. You can find his first one here and his second one here. I am so pleased that Halil continues to submit images through Instagram using #the_whole_story hashtag because his images have some fascinating tales to tell! As a side note Halil always makes my day a little brighter by adding music to his email for my listening pleasure when he sends me the image details. What a kind person! So nice to meet people like him from across the globe!

The Whole Story by Halil Yalçin
I want to tell you a moment, a little moment of life. At the same location, you will see two choices made. Depending on your preference, you can be a hero or you can be completely forgotten. I think it's a game of life. Sometimes, really, life plays with us.
During our last trip to Istanbul, my wife and I wanted to go to Maiden's Tower for private dining. The historic monument is one of the romantic symbols of Istanbul. You can easily get there by motor boat from the shore. When the boat left the shore, I started taking photos - the beauty was incredible.
I noticed a young man with a mobile phone in his hand. He was talking in a very distressed manner with someone. I stopped taking photos to listen. He said, "everything is over between us. I am so sad, do you understand? Everything is over..." I think he had spoken to his love. I turned my head and only took one or two photos. I looked to my wife and softly held her hands.
Does he know the story of "Maiden's Tower" which was off in the distance? I think he knew nothing.
The Legend of Maiden's TowerMaiden's Tower is located at the southern entrance of the Bosphorus-Istanbul. Its name comes from many legends. According to one legend, a young man named Leandros falls in love with a woman named Hero who is a priestess of Aphrodite. Hero is living in the tower. Every night, Hero builds a fire in the tower so that Leandros may find his way to her by swimming to the tower.
One night, however, the fire started by Hero is put out by a storm, Leandros loses his way in the cold waters of the Bosphorus and dies. When Hero learns of the fate of Leandros, she cannot endure the pain, she jumps into the water to her death.
This love story has become a legend that will be remembered for centuries. Life is full of sharp contrasts. This young man left his love where an eternal love lived on. I said, "On one side a story of eternal love, the other side leaving a love. C'est la vie!"
Process - I love Hipstamatic. During my trip I tried taking my photos with some of my favorite combinations. This shot was taken using the combination of Florence lens and Blanko BL4 film. Then edited with Oggl using John S Lens, C-Type Plate film for creating a grainy, nostalgic image.

During our weekend trip, my family and I were losing ourselves in the crowd of Istanbul. Mosques, seagulls, blue Bosphorus, small fishing boats were moored to the shore which provided such beautiful feelings for us.
In the crowd, I noticed a man. A beer in his hand, the cigarette on his lips, he looked around the surrounding area. While we were rushing through our trip, I thought that he really enjoyed the life. At that moment a verse of a poem came to mind.
“Not living,
This rushing will kill me” (1)
Fine Days (3)
On this kind of day I resigned
My job in 'Pious Foundations'.
On this kind of day I started to smoke
On this kind of day I fell in love
On this kind of day I forgot
To bring home bread and salt
On this kind of day I had a relapse
In my versifying disease.
These fine days have been my ruin.

My name is Halil Yalçin. I was born in Milas, a lovely small Aegean town. I have added a wonderful marriage and a very beautiful girl into 50 years of my life. I am a mechanical engineer and I work as a Chief of the Plant Projects in an Automobile Factory in Turkey. In my free time I enjoy experimenting with digital photography using my iPhone 4S.

In the crowd, I noticed a man. A beer in his hand, the cigarette on his lips, he looked around the surrounding area. While we were rushing through our trip, I thought that he really enjoyed the life. At that moment a verse of a poem came to mind.
This rushing will kill me” (1)
I smiled. Our surrounding area was so nice but, we did not actually get a taste of it. That man was doing it. He was listening to Istanbul, he was watching Istanbul through the smokes of his cigarette. Perhaps he is a poet. He left himself to the mood of Istanbul. I'm sure. Poet Orhan Veli Kanık (2) had done the same thing in the 1940s. He had purified himself from the everyday hustle and bustle in the same air. "How magnificent, I'm in Istanbul and I'm not reading, I'm living in a poem." I said to myself. Yes, I did not have my verses, but I could take photographs.
"A picture is the poem without any word"
I love Hipstamatic apps, I tried taking a photo with my favorite combinations. Then, I remembered the polaroid of Diego Uchitel. I thought I'd reflect images of 1940. Thus, I could show Istanbul from the eyes of Orhan Veli. I selected the combination Uchitel 20 and John S for creating the grainy, nostalgic image. The images reminded me of the poem of Orhan Veli.
