Anatomy of an Edit - I See Sap People
While hiking near Lake Arrowhead on a photo shoot, I discovered a tree trunk with sap dripping down the side. The colors were so brilliant that I took a few photos of it. While viewing on my iPad, the sap started to look like figures to me, so using Sketch Club, I drew some lines around the figures I found.
There seemed to be a gent with hands in his pocket on the left and I wanted to emphasize this figure.
The orange in the background started to resemble the side of a building as I worked so I added a window from another photo using the layers function Sketch Club app.
Back to Snapseed for some tuning and cropping.

Tutorial "We are the Dance"
Below is a step by step tutorial for the creation of this image "We are the Dance". This edit was done on an iPad 4.

Below is the original image (shot with iPhone 5s using native camera app) after cropping in Snapseed - It was a figurine I saw in a model home which I held against a blank wall to get a solid background.
Next step was to invert the image in Adobe Photoshop Express. The Invert filter can be found under Looks in the filter menu.
Next step was to open the above image in Snapseed and convert it to black and white and increase the contrast.
The next step was to take the above image and open it in Pixology. Here I applied two of the Pixology textures along with a texture (below center) from the Susan Tuttle iPhoneography course. Pixology allows you to add any of your own images to use as textures and you can alter the blend modes as well.
To add movement to the piece I opened the above image in FocalLab and used the Motion Blur setting to apply just a bit of blur mainly to the lower part of the figure.
The above image was then taken into Path on where I added the text. With Path on you can swipe any path on an image and then the text will follow the line of your path. You can also combine fonts for a whimsical look, as I did here.
I thought the above result was a bit harsh, so I opened it in Stackables where I applied one of my custom filters.
Next I took the softened result of Stackables and combined it with the previous image using the Sketch Club app to layer and blend. You could use any app that allows for blending. I also like the above as a stand alone piece.
Finally I opened this newly softened combined image in Snapseed where I increased the Detail a bit to pull out some of the texture.

World Cup Mania - Creating a Composite

Here's how I accomplished my vision. We were out looking at model homes yesterday in Southern California and I was on the hunt to find a globe and a cup to photograph.
I succeeded! I got lucky because I was able to photograph them both against a solid background and the lighting inside the model home was decent.
For the editing process I layered the image of the globe on top of the image of the cup (I used the cup on the left) in the Sketch Club app. Sketch Club is my go-to layering app only because I'm really familiar with it so I can do my work quickly. I erased everything around the globe and positioned it on top of the cup using the Transform tool in the layers menu.
While still in Sketch Club I used the eyedropper tool to match the color of the area around the cup and painted over it with a soft brush to get rid of the cup on the right. The result was a little rough, so I then opened the image in Repix and brushed over it with the Chalk brush to smooth and blend a bit. I learned this trick from my friend Jane Fiala (thanks Jane!)
I did some cropping and tuning in Snapseed but needed to add a bit of space around the left side of the cup and globe, so I opened the image in AntiCrop to add more pixels on the left.
The text was added with PathOn - with this app you can draw a path with your finger and the text will follow that path - very cool!
Final touch was to take the image with the text into Stackables where I used one of the formulas to filter the image to my liking.

Oh How I've Missed You!
I've missed so much about blogging...the camaraderie with the community, the intimacy with the wonderful iPhone photographers that I have featured, the sharing of the beauty that so many put out to the world with no hope of gain for themselves!
Dare I say I may re-enter the blogging world in a very limited basis...why not? I may manage only a couple of posts a month, but it's something I really want to continue to do.
There is so much to share in this ever expanding world of iPhone photography. My latest love is the Snapseed update. I'm loving the Stacks feature which allows for copying and inserting the edits done on one image to another. Using this feature, you can also "paint" in an effect on just a portion of an image. Currently there is no way to save presets of Stacks you have created, but you can create an album on your iPhone or iPad called Presets and then save the photos with the editing combinations you like to that folder. When you want to recreate that "look" just open the image copy the Stacks and Insert them into another photo. This is an easy way to create a series of images with the same effect.
To copy the steps you performed on a particular image, Click on the number in the white square in the top right corner. This will open up a menu along the lower right side that shows the individual steps taken. Click on the three dots in the upper right hand corner and select "Copy". Open another image and click on the "0" in the white square. Click on the three dots and select "Insert". Click on each edit step until you have added them all to your new image and Save.
I did this with a recent photo shoot of my granddaughter (images were shot with a Samsung NX300 - I know it's not a mobile device but I love the narrow depth of field I get with the 30mm pancake lens).
If Google is listening, we would love the ability to save presets!
I look forward to seeing you all on a part-time basis.

Photo App Friday - Creative Blur and an Effexy App Giveaway!

I really love this image just as it is, but with the method below I can get a little different result.
Step 1 - Open the image in Effexy and click on the + sign at the top. Open the Effex folder and select Zoom Lite. Pinch the image to create a custom zoom. For my image I had the Blurring and Intensity sliders set to maximum. Click the arrow in the upper right hand corner and Save Image.
Step 2 - Open the image in Snapseed and select Tilt Shift. For Style choose Elliptical. Center on your area of focus. Slide your finger up to reveal the Tilt Shift adjustment menu and adjust Blur Strength, Brightness, Saturation and Contrast. Save.
Step 3 - Open the Snapseed version in Sketch Club. To do this press the arrow in upper right hand corner and choose New. Select the size of the "Sketch". In the upper left hand corner select the Layers icon and select Load Image. Choose your saved Snapseed version. On the layer BELOW the Snapseed version, load your original image. On the top center, you will find the tool menu - select Eraser and choose a soft-edged brush for your eraser. Erase the center of the image to reveal the in focus image below. Save.
Step 4 - (Optional) Open the image in Snapseed again and apply Center Focus and adjust to suit your image. I added a bit more blur and vignette around the borders.

Step 1 - Add Zoom Lite in Effexy
Step 2 - Add Elliptical Tilt Shift in Snapseed
Step 3 - Layer Snapseed version over original in Sketch Club and erase the center of the image to reveal original.
Step 4 (Optional) - This time I wanted to add a bit of a grunge effect, so I opened the image in Snapseed and selected Grunge from the menu. I chose a Style number that was around 1430. Slide your finger up and down over the screen of your device to reveal the Grunge adjustment menu and customize Brightness, Contrast, Texture Strength and Saturation. For this image I then applied Center Focus one more time. Save.
